I think the pink wall sculpture that Kim Beck did is my favorite out off all of her work that is posted. This is because I think it has a presence in the room. The repetition of color is a positive influence on this piece because i think it forces the viewer to look at the shapes and layering that is occurring. In the close up it appears that each of these shapes are architectural pieces and they are very intricately cut out and layered. I think that this precision helps in the overall appearance of the piece because it looks like there is something happening and it makes the viewer want to get closer to the piece. I think that this could be about how much our country depends on technology and improving upon what we already have. In this piece, having all of the buildings or machine parts piled up it looks as though there is almost no more room and they are all toppling over the sides and spilling out to the other walls. It is almost like by making all of these buildings and machines it is taking over the space in the room. I think her use of repetition and size helps to make her piece more visually interesting.
Kim Beck takes what can be interpreted as a conventional concept- architecture displayed through perspective and successfully evolves it into an interactive series of works. The pink foamboard buildings are amazing because of their 3D installation quality. They overlap in ways that imply movement and the composition keeps the viewers eyes actively engaged even as far down to the side walls with their little details. This series of works helps understand what's going on in her head and how her concepts developed starting with the black and white/ negative space works. I find the reverse of black and white very interesting. The line drawings of the buildings, then express the movement and help establish composition for the much more complex interactive pink foam installation. Overall, Kim Beck's ideas were very successful and innovative throughout this collection. I definitely enjoyed them!
The black and white silhouettes remind me of the negative space assignment we did in class. Kim Beck's concept then develops as she layers architectural form over architectural form, like the skeletal drawings of the stools we did the same day (as the negative space drawings). The installation piece of the pink architectural forms then (in my opinion) is the culmination of the previous drawings, as the silhouettes of the houses and buildings etc are layered one on top of another and another and another. I think her process is innovative and clear, allowing us to look into the development of her work as an artist, and into the innovation behind her projects.
I really like Kim Beck's works and ideas because they are something I have not seen for a while/not at all. I particularly like the pink installation piece using architectural forms. I think the overlapping is very strong, and all the various shapes and designs give it strength. Also, the pink works well and stands out against the white wall, and once side of the piece leads your eye to the other. In the closeup picture, the viewer is able get a clearer idea of what Kim Beck's intention was. You can tell that she used architectural influences and a lot of geometrical shapes. It looks to me as if she used architectural shapes to make a small architectural city.
I also like the black and white silhouettes, because they are very simple, and I think simplicity is important in artwork. The contrast of black and white works well. I think Kim Beck is a very talented and innovative artist, and I enjoyed at looking at some of her pieces.
